Today we commemorate the birthday of Keanu Reeves, actor, who was born 2 September 1964.  He portrayed Klaatu in The Day the Earth Stood Still, a 2008 remake of the 1951 classic which starred Michael Rennie as Klaatu (see 10 June 2010 blog).

Today I wish to commemorate Glenn Ford, actor, who passed away 30 August 2006.  I always liked his performance as USAF Colonel Pete Moore in the movie The Disappearance of Flight 412 (see 20 May 2010 blog). 

Like Donald Keyhoe and Stanton Friedman I have never seen a flying saucer/UFO.  Several years ago in Nassau County on Long Island NY I saw something travelling east to west, paralleling the Long Island Railroad.  It was late afternoon and somewhat overcast.  Something suddenly caught my attention.  Its outline was somewhat indistinct but seemed essentially circular and very large.  It was completely silent, incredibly fast and moved in an arc.  As it moved away it it became smaller and smaller before disappearing from view.  This took all of maybe five seconds.  I described this event to an astonomer who said that it may have been a bolide.  When I mentioned this event to a close relative I got the "you've got to be kidding" look.  I never said it was metallic, a flying saucer or UFO.  Is it any wonder that people are loathe to report anomalous sightings or events?

Just watched on YouTube a Mike Wallace interview of Donald Keyhoe on 8 March 1958.  Absolutely engrossing.  At one point Keyhoe refers to Project Blue Book Special Report No. 14 (a comprehensive study of USAF UFO cases by Battelle Memorial Institute).  This Report is often cited by Stanton Friedman in his lectures and writings.  Near the end of the interview Wallace asked Keyhoe if he ever saw a flying saucer and Keyhoe said no.  Friedman also has never seen a flying saucer/UFO.  In his closing remarks Wallace takes a cheap shot at Keyhoe thereby demonstrating his (i.e. Wallace's) bias, ignorance and unprofessionalism.  Keyhoe was a pioneer and one day will be fully vindicated when public disclosure comes.

Today Voyager 2 (which is still operational) celebrates two milestones: on this date in 1981 it made its closest approach to Saturn; on this date in 1989 it made its closest approach to Neptune.  Its mission is now regarded as the "Planetary Grand Tour."  The Jet Propulsion Laboratory near Pasadena CA is responsible for developing and building Voyager 2.  On a prior vacation I was fortunate to have visited the JPL and was especially impressed by the clean room where new space probes are built.
